I feel like Drake and Uzi have been teasing this track for decades.
When it comes to unofficial releases, Drake might just be unbeatable. Over the past few months, he’s been consistently dropping some of his best work in years, all under the radar via his so-called hard drive leaks. This surge of top-tier music seems to coincide with him being under pressure due to his well-known “20 vs. 1” situation. What’s also intriguing is the lineup of collaborators Drake has been teaming up with on these recent tracks. From Young Thug and 21 Savage to Playboi Carti and Latto, the Toronto rapper continues to prove he’s still well-connected with some of the biggest names in the game. Today, he added another impressive collab to the list with the release of “At The Gates” featuring Lil Uzi Vert, which just dropped on X.
The first thing that came to mind when I saw this title was Heaven’s Gate—you know, that infamous cult tied to mass suicides. Thankfully, “At The Gates” isn’t nearly that dark. Over a bass-heavy backdrop with shimmering elements, Lil Uzi Vert delivers a heart-pumping hook and verse, flexing his luxury cars and talent for attracting baddies. Drake jumps in, talking his usual s**t from the jump. Particularly, he calls out rappers who need him to stay relevant (Kendrick diss, maybe?) and brags about his lavish purchases and island getaways. I love his fast-paced, relentless flow, perfectly matching his gassed-up energy. All in all, this track is a slick little banger, perfect as an album cut.
