TOP 5

5. Open Hearts

This track is a total earworm.

“Open Hearts” gives major ’80s vibes, but in a good way. This song features fun synths and quirky guitar sounds, making it easy for it to crawl into your brain and stick there. Abel talks about the struggles of opening your heart to love again after being hurt by lovers in the past. He compares his love interest in this song to an angel who is keeping him alive.

4. Niagara Falls

This sounds like a sultry romance novel.

In “Niagara Falls,” The Weeknd sings a forbidden love story, reminiscing about the things he used to do with a woman and confessing the things he still wants to do. He took her on trips, spent money on her, and more. The problem now? She has a baby daddy and seems to be stuck in a situationship. But it’s cool—Abel knows who she’s really loyal to.

3. Timeless (Ft. Playboi Carti)

This song won’t get old anytime soon.

Playboi Carti kicks off this song with a strong start, and I was worried that the energy would fizzle out quickly. Spoiler alert—it didn’t. The Weeknd and Playboi Carti play off each other effortlessly, maintaining the same energy throughout the entire track. The chorus is incredibly catchy, and the song pulls you in right from the beginning. It’s easy to see why “Timeless” is a single.

2. Hurry Up Tomorrow

Ah, the title track.

This song is really compelling because you can feel the transitions not just within the track, but across the entire album. Abel addresses themes of not wanting to live this life, struggling to change, and confronting his trauma throughout Hurry Up Tomorrow. In this track, he initially doubles down on those struggles, but by the chorus, you can hear his desire for change. He’s done with the lies and the pain; he just wants peace. The song is slower and sadder, with complex vocal runs and a deeply vulnerable tone.

1. Reflections Laughing (Ft. Travis Scott)

I felt intoxicated while listening to this song sober.

“Reflections Laughing” is emotionally charged from the very first note to the last. The track features beautiful strings and a subtle choral echo at certain points, which elevate the mental imagery as you listen. There’s also a voicemail clip in the middle of the song that gets distorted, adding a layer of storytelling while giving the track a personal touch.

RGM RATING

(77%)

Hurry Up Tomorrow is The Weeknd’s sixth studio album and the highly anticipated sequel to After Hours and Dawn FM, completing the trilogy.

The album delves into familiar themes for The Weeknd’s fans, exploring topics such as substance use, soul-selling metaphors, and deep-seated trauma related to family, relationships, and self-worth. Tracks cover a wide range of emotions, from heartbreak and fleeting connections to personal loss and grief, with many more layered themes in between.

The album’s flow is almost cinematic, with songs seamlessly transitioning into each other, creating a fluid listening experience where it can sometimes be hard to distinguish where one ends and the next begins. Choosing a top five was a challenge, but it’s safe to say that Hurry Up Tomorrow is a must-listen, and I’d highly recommend it to friends.
