My wife is not allowed to listen to Brent Faiyaz’s music.
Brent Faiyaz is entering his next era with style, substance, and plenty of smoke. The R&B star has officially announced his new album Icon, set to drop on September 19th, and to give fans a taste of what’s to come, he’s released two new tracks: “peter pan.” and “tony soprano.” Both songs offer contrasting yet complementary glimpses into Brent’s current mindset—blending intimacy, emotional vulnerability, and unbothered toxicity in only the way he can.
“peter pan.” floats over a stripped-down, vintage-sounding instrumental, evoking the soulful warmth of the ‘70s. Over this mellow groove, Brent channels his softer side, professing his desire to be around a woman he clearly holds close. His lyrics are poetic and pleading, urging her to “open up her windows to her heart,” while affirming his love for her both inside and out. The raw tenderness in his vocals proves Brent still knows how to craft intimate moments that hit deep.
In contrast, “tony soprano.” delivers a colder, more jaded Brent. Set against a moody piano-driven beat with just enough knock to keep it gritty, Faiyaz steps into full-blown antihero mode. He sings about being emotionally detached, numb to opportunistic people, and unapologetically savage when it comes to relationships. There’s a quiet storm in his tone as he floats between serene vocals and chilly indifference. Midway through, the beat takes a turn, becoming darker and more aggressive, further amplifying the track’s menace. Brent even takes time to talk his talk in what feels like either an intro or a gritty interlude that sets the tone for what’s to come.
