G Herbo Channels Bone Thugs Energy on “Thug”

Rating: 4 out of 5.

No matter the beat you give him, G Herbo is always going to sound like G Herbo.

G Herbo taps into heavy nostalgia on “Thug,” a track that clearly pulls inspiration from Bone Thugs-N-Harmony. Using a flipped version of the classic “Thuggish Ruggish Bone” instrumental, the song blends old-school influence with modern drill production, creating a darker and more aggressive atmosphere.

Throughout the record, Herbo uses a slower and more controlled flow than usual, almost mimicking the laid-back but eerie cadence Bone Thugs became known for. His vocal delivery feels villainous and gritty as he raps about luxury cars, surviving harsh environments, and being surrounded by dudes who tote more guns than Contra.

What stands out most is the atmosphere. The hypnotic production and steady pacing give the track a smoky, late-night feel that leans heavily into nostalgia without sounding completely outdated. While the song may not be one of Herbo’s most exciting or energetic releases, it still works because of how committed he sounds to the concept.

Every time I hear Bone Thugs’ music, I have to remind myself that those negroes are NOT from California.
