This is the kind of track that would go crazy at a Black skating rink.
One of the first things you’ll say after pressing play on a Montae Harri$ track is, “Damn, that boy can spit.” The second thing you might say is, “Damn, he picks some very good beats to do work over.” In “FIRST GEN,” Montae continues that exact formula, and I think he knocks it out of the park.
The production on “FIRST GEN” comes out swinging, bringing heavy 808s, bouncing percussion, infectious chants, and a throwback feel that instantly reminds you of when Southern hip-hop ran the speakers at car meets, clubs, and house parties.
Montae doesn’t just sit on the beat, either. He matches its momentum with a steady, confident flow, talking his grind, celebrating the wins he’s earned, and making sure the competition knows he’s been lapping them. Based on the sheer power of the beat, you’d think it would be difficult to match its energy, but he does that and then some here.
The nostalgic “Shawty Freak a Lil’ Sumthin’” vocal from Lil Jon & The East Side Boyz is one of the smartest parts of “FIRST GEN.” That familiar vocal immediately brings some throwback flavor, but Montae keeps the record feeling fresh by building it around modern production. With Miami bass, crunk, and classic Southern rap all showing up in the mix, this track takes you on one helluva ride.
