Dolly Parton

Today is a heartbreaking day for country music fans and Americans alike.

Dolly Parton, country music icon and philanthropist, has passed away at 80.

Her family’s obituary stated: “A rhinestone life that shone bright enough for the world to see, Dolly will forever stand as an inspiration not only through her timeless music and prolific songwriting, but also her wit, warmth, and kindness that made us all feel like family. Dolly Parton’s legacy is one of love, compassion, and resilience. With a seven-decade career, she inspired multiple generations of artists and fans with her music and an unwavering commitment to making the world a better place. Her songs will continue to resonate with people of all ages, and her philanthropic work will have a lasting impact.”

Parton was known for writing beautiful songs like “Jolene” and “I Will Always Love You,” as well as her generous charitable contributions to causes such as child literacy, disaster relief, and the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine. The Dollywood Foundation’s Imagination Library provided scholarships and monetary incentives to students to reduce high school dropout rates and promote literacy.

Parton has inspired prominent musicians like Shania Twain, Jack White, Reba McEntire, Kacey Musgraves, Kesha, Taylor Swift, The Grateful Dead, Carrie Underwood, and her own goddaughter, Miley Cyrus. Parton’s influence on music, especially among female artists, and American culture at large cannot be overstated. She will be greatly missed.

As someone who has loved her as both a musician and a person for a long time, this news hit me really hard. We truly lost a light today.

I think I speak for all of us when I say, Dolly, we will always love you.
