WTF is this?
You probably won’t find a stranger combination than this one. 2 Chainz and Statik Selektah decided to link up with Cash Cobain and Young Nudy for a track called “Reign.” Unsurprisingly, the song sounds as unpredictable as that lineup suggests.
Statik Selektah supplies remarkable production that mixes soulful textures, drill-inspired energy, and an almost beatbox-like rhythm that would make the great Doug E. Fresh proud.
Unfortunately, different doesn’t always mean good. Cash Cobain handles the chorus with his sexy drill style, but he sounds almost uncertain about what he’s saying. Honestly, I think the hook is awful. 2 Chainz fares better, sliding through his verse with his usual sly personality and effortless coolness. Young Nudy adds the rawest performance, sounding like the carefree friend who might crash out or jump into a freezing pool without removing his clothes.
The collaboration deserves credit for being adventurous, and Statik’s beat nearly makes everything work. Still, I couldn’t get past the dated flows. Cash Cobain sounds lost, Nudy feels completely out of place, and 2 Chainz is the only rapper who truly understands the assignment. Weird can be wonderful, but “Reign” never becomes more than an interesting experiment
