French Montana and Max B just feel like two dudes who would hop on Fenix Flexin’s wave.

Fenix Flexin has been accused of using AI, and the funniest part is that he doesn’t seem to give a damn. After the successful yet highly questionable “Rubberz,” he returns with “Run It Up,” another retro-minded collaboration featuring French Montana and Max B.

Most listeners will probably describe the production as ’80s-inspired. Personally, I hear the soundtrack to the first Sonic the Hedgehog game. The beat is bright, synthetic, and slightly cheap, giving the three rappers space to use elementary flows and flex about money, status, and everything else they have accumulated.

Their individual performances keep the track from becoming interchangeable. While Fenix sounds like a robot who recently discovered autotune, French Montana delivers his verse with that signature cooler-than-the-other-side-of-the-pillow approach, gliding through the beat without appearing remotely concerned. Max B completes the trio by sounding like the hood Cookie Monster, which somehow fits the strange atmosphere better than it should.

“Run It Up” is not necessarily a bad listen. It has catchy moments, and the performers bring distinct personalities. Still, the entire record feels inexpensive and slightly artificial. Whatever.
