Offset Recruits Don Toliver for the Romantic “Every Night”

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Offset is days away from releasing his new album, GMFU. What makes this rollout interesting is that he already delivered two projects last year, so no one can accuse him of starving fans. This time, however, the Atlanta rapper appears ready to embrace a more romantic direction. Between those mysterious hotline teaser videos and his “Something I Need” single, the mood has been clear.

Today, Offset continued the rollout with “Every Night,” a collaboration with Don Toliver. The track runs on grungy instrumentation, faint R&B textures, and a sample of Jodeci’s “Freak’N You.” To make a long story short, this beat was created for grown folks to make questionable late-night decisions to.

Offset responds with a subtle attempt at singing, a steady flow, and lyrics dedicated to a woman he sounds prepared to offer a max contract. Don Toliver brings soul and dynamic melodies, although I am not completely convinced his style fits the record. He also gets much more specific about what he wants to do once the bedroom door closes.

“Every Night” is definitely good. The sample works, Offset sounds committed to the romantic bag, and the track keeps GMFU interesting.
