Charlamagne Tha God Says Drake Has “Kind of Stopped Making Music”

Friendly reminder: Drake dropped THREE albums this year.

Charlamagne Tha God has another Drake take making the rounds, and this one required clarification almost immediately.

On Brilliant Idiots, he suggested Drake has “kind of stopped making music” during a conversation about aging rappers. Given Drake’s three albums and deluxe edition this year, Andrew Schulz and producer Taylor Hayes understandably questioned what he meant.

Charlamagne responded by asking them to name three songs from the recent projects. Hayes named “Janice STFU,” said she hadn’t heard all the releases, and mentioned the older “GIMME A HUG.” Schulz contributed “Shabang,” which Charlamagne incorrectly associated with “Janice STFU.”

The discussion expanded to J. Cole’s The Fall-Off before Charlamagne said an artist’s connection with their own fans is what ultimately matters. That’s a reasonable point, though what the f**k did that have to do with the other point?

I think it makes sense to say Drake’s recent music doesn’t reach casual listeners as strongly as his earlier work. But saying he stopped releasing music is foolish.

Given that Drake has the year’s highest-selling hip-hop album, this comment MIGHT reflect how far hip-hop has fallen: someone who “doesn’t release relevant music anymore” is still leading the wave.
