Really soon, we’ll be getting a new ScHoolboy Q album to indulge in. I kind of felt like I’ve already heard half it because of all the singles he has released these past couple of days. Five days ago, he dropped “Yearn 101,” fourteen days ago, he dropped “Back n Love” and “Blueslides,” and today, he decided to release two new singles: “Cooties” and “Love Birds.” People don’t release these many singles off albums anymore.
ScHoolboy Q seems to be treating us to an early taste of his upcoming album with a barrage of singles. In just the past couple of days, he’s unloaded a handful of tracks: “Yearn 101” dropped five days ago, followed by “Back n Love” and “Blueslides” fourteen days ago. And today, we’re treated to not one, but two new singles: “Cooties” and “Love Birds.” It’s not often we see this many singles released ahead of an album drop these days.
In “Cooties,” ScHoolboy Q lays it all out, discussing his improved mindset, healed scars, and personal growth. The track is propelled by a gentle, piano-driven beat with a subtle edge, setting a laid-back tone. While ScHoolboy’s flow could be steadier, the song feels like an interlude, perhaps not to be taken too seriously, but rather as a vibe leading into “Blue Lips.”
Just like “Cooties,” “Love Birds” is definitely on the chill side. In the track, which is dominated by James Fauntleroy (At least this YouTube version of the track is), you get a smooth, vintage-sounding R&B beat, some passionate vocals out of James, and nothing but moral support from ScHoolboy (In other words, he does nothing). I can see this track being way longer and with ScHoolBoy verses on the album version.
ScHoolboy Q’s album is going to be weird as hell, isn’t it?
