Michael O. Brings the Spice in “Japa”

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Portland-based singer-songwriter and producer Michael O. blends his Nigerian heritage with American influences to create his unique tunes. While his interest in music has always been evident, it wasn’t until he achieved second place on NBC’s “The Sing-Off” with his college acapella group, The Dartmouth Aires, in 2011, that his career gained momentum. Two years later, Michael’s debut EP, In The Beginning, soared to the top 5 on the iTunes R&B charts shortly after its release and remained the best-selling EP in Northern New England for the year. Throughout his career, Michael has released numerous singles, including “Umbrella,” “Stars,” and “Overload.” His latest offering is the remix of his recent single, “Japa,” featuring artist Egar Boi.

“Japa” encapsulates the Yoruba concept of “escape,” as listeners are drawn into its vibrant Afrobeat-influenced melodies and impeccably clear-cut production, which beautifully showcases Michael’s alluring vocals. Together with Egar Boi, Michael paints a vivid picture of longing to escape the relentless negativity that accompanies growing success, yearning to find peace amidst the chaos of their hectic lives.

Take a break from the stress and immerse yourself in the soothing vibes of “Japa” (Remix) by Michael O. featuring Egar Boi.
