21 Savage happily chooses violence in “WHAT HAPPENED TO THE STREETS?”

Honorable Mention. HALFTIME INTERLUDE
I hate it when you musicians make your best tracks interludes!
The transition from “GANG OVER EVERYTHING” to “HALFTIME INTERLUDE” deserves chef’s kisses. It’s like a soul-filled baton passing between tracks. On this one, 21 Savage raps with assertiveness and energy that perfectly match the uptempo, soulful production. Lyrically, he recounts the people he’s robbed (Yikes), the violence he’s committed (Double yikes), and his relentless hustle (No yikes needed). This track is the ultimate “y’all must’ve forgotten who I am” moment—definitely not one to skip.
5. ATLANTA TEARS (Ft. Lil Baby)
I f**k with it when Atlanta ninjas rap over New York beats.
Yes, “ATLANTA TEARS” features a New York-style beat. As a matter of fact, it has that soulful vibe Jay-Z might’ve dropped a triple-double on. Over it, 21 Savage and Lil Baby spit nothing but real bars about giving back to the hood, staying solid in a world full of fake people, and cutting out what’s bad for them.
Both rappers ride the production flawlessly, delivering straightforward verses that never get old. Skipping a chorus, this track does two things: it reminds us that Atlanta artists can get lyrical and shows that the city is one big brotherhood. You love to see it.
4. I WISH (Ft. Jawan Harris)
Who the hell is cutting onions in the trap?
One of my favorite tracks by freaky-ass R. Kelly is “I Wish.” I’m so glad 21 Savage decided to remix it for all the YNs to know how good this s**t is.
In “I WISH,” the classic track’s production is used, while Jawan Harris delivers a chorus very similar to the original. As for 21 Savage, he pays homage to all the fallen rappers, wishing they had made different decisions on the days they met their demise. Though the song initially has a slightly cheesy feel, it’s also powerful to listen to and a dope track you can feel in your soul.

3. RECOUP (Ft. Drake)
Where the hell did Drake and 21 Savage make this demented-ass track—at the lobby of the Blair Witch’s house?
In “RECOUP,” Drake and 21 Savage go back and forth spitting bars about being shooters, staying a few steps ahead of their opps, and collecting bodies in cartoonishly violent ways. While 21 Savage delivers his signature cold demeanor, Drake surprises with a simple, almost awkward flow, sounding like he’s struggling with a teleprompter—but it oddly fits the demented, piano-driven beat, which evokes visions of zombies rising from sewers.
2. J.O.W.Y.H (JUMP OUT)
Sherrone Moore heard this song and went crazy, didn’t he?
21 Savage gets loose on “J.O.W.Y.H (JUMP OUT)” (pause). Over a dark yet uptempo trap beat—perfect for a hopscotch session in a bando—he delivers laid-back, unbothered bars about baby mama drama, three-somes as workouts, showing up to block parties with Uzis (not the rapper), and stealing girls that aren’t his. The track flows effortlessly, anchored by a catchy chorus. This, to me, is the definition of a 21 track.
1. GANG OVER EVERYTHING (Ft. Metro Boomin)
21 Savage and Metro Boomin have a better record together than the OKC Thunder, dawg.
The chemistry between Metro Boomin and 21 Savage has never been stronger, and “GANG OVER EVERYTHING” proves it. The track features a holy, uptempo trap beat that hits hard, paired with some of 21’s most focused bars and steady flow. In his verses, 21 reflects on the brothers he’s supported, navigating distractions from women, embodying manhood, and staying loyal to his roots. The way 21 glides over the beat while the instrumental never stops pounding your soul makes this track unforgettable.

RGM RATING
(82%)
21 Savage is exactly what hip-hop needed this year. In a time when the genre feels constantly reinvented, he brings back something familiar and raw: violence!
On WHAT HAPPENED TO THE STREETS?, the Atlanta-born rapper dives deep into the harsh realities that shaped him, touching on hustling, personal growth, gunplay, revenge, and occasional luxury. That said, about 90% of the content centers on… shooting people.
The album blends grim, soulful, dramatic, cinematic trap beats with 21’s signature numb, unbothered tone. Each track flows seamlessly, combining violence, confidence, and precision in ways few modern trap artists can achieve. His lyricism remains ruthless yet calculated, scratching that primal, violent itch while reminding listeners why he’s a mainstay in the genre.
The fourteen-track album includes features from Latto, Lil Baby, Drake, Young Nudy, GloRilla, G Herbo, Metro Boomin, and Jawan Harris. While their contributions add some fresh dynamics to the project’s dark atmosphere, 21 Savage easily carries the album on his own—so much so that many guest spots feel almost unnecessary.
Overall, WHAT HAPPENED TO THE STREETS? is a strong, cohesive project that flows well and showcases 21 Savage’s ability to remain authentic, lethal, and relevant in a rapidly evolving hip-hop landscape. My one gripe? We didn’t get enough “21, 21, 21” adlibs (I shaved off a percentage point because of this).
