Jack Harlow Explains Why He Leaned Deeper Into Black Music On ‘Monica’

The rapper explains why leaning into Black music felt authentic for Monica.

Jack Harlow recently offered insight into the creative direction behind his new album Monica, explaining that the project intentionally leans deeper into Black music rather than shifting toward what he described as “a whiter genre.” During a conversation about the album, which has him diving headfirst into a crooner role, Harlow acknowledged that the cultural climate surrounding race and music played a role in how he approached the project.

The Louisville rapper made it clear that the choice ultimately comes from genuine appreciation. “I love Black music,” Harlow said, emphasizing that the sound has always been a core part of the music he enjoys creating. Hip-hop, soul, and other Black-rooted styles have long shaped the sonic identity behind his work.

At the same time, Harlow acknowledged that he understands the broader political conversations happening in the industry. “Of course I’m hyper aware of the politics of today; that safer landing spot that a lot of my white contemporaries have found,” he explained, referencing the tendency for some artists to move toward genres or sounds considered more comfortable or culturally neutral.

For Harlow, however, Monica represents a different decision. Instead of taking the expected route, he suggested that the album follows a path that feels authentic to his interests and influences. “There are plenty of people expecting me to take some of the routes y’all are taking,” he said, signaling that the project embraces the musical direction he genuinely prefers.
