JID is tired of y’all underrating him.
JID appeared frustrated online this week after being left off the list of nominees for this year’s BET Awards. In a now-deleted post (Kudos to Kurrco for catching it), he criticized the award show by writing, “n**** remix the same people every year at the BET awards.”
JID also addressed a lyric from J. Cole’s “99 Build Freestyle” in another deleted tweet, saying, “I been overly platinum that bar was ass.” I interpreted Cole’s line as support for JID, suggesting that his talent deserved greater commercial recognition. However, JID’s response made it seem like he is becoming frustrated with constantly being framed as an underrated or overlooked artist.
To a certain extent, the frustrations make sense. Over the last several years, JID has consistently built momentum while still being discussed more like an underdog than a major rap figure. His recent album God Does Like Ugly, which featured appearances from artists including Westside Gunn, Clipse, and Don Toliver, was widely considered one of last year’s strongest hip-hop releases.
At this point, it’s clear JID believes his accomplishments deserve stronger recognition from both award shows and public conversations. I believe this, too.
