Spotify Announces “AI Persona” Label for AI-Generated Artist Profiles

Spotify is giving listeners a clearer way to identify AI-generated artists on the platform.

Spotify is making another major move as artificial intelligence continues changing the way music is created, released, and discovered.

Beginning next month, the streaming platform will apply an “AI Persona” label to artist profiles that are identified as being AI-generated. Music from those profiles will also be left out of personalized recommendations, keeping AI-generated artists from being pushed through Spotify’s recommendation system.

And honestly, this feels like something Spotify needed to address.

AI tracks are becoming more and more common, and the technology has gotten extremely good at making artificial voices, performances, and even entire artist identities feel real. The days of immediately knowing when something was created by AI are disappearing quickly.

Spotify’s new label gives listeners at least some idea of what they’re actually hearing.

There will also be some protection for artists who believe they’ve been incorrectly labeled. Spotify says artists will be able to appeal an “AI Persona” designation, while users will eventually have the option to report profiles they believe could be AI-generated.

The move also fits with Spotify’s recent push for greater transparency. SongDNA gives listeners more information about the people behind a track, while AI Credits allow artists to disclose how much artificial intelligence was used during their creative process.

Artist Profile Protection gives artists another layer of control by allowing them to review and approve releases appearing on their Spotify profiles.

AI is changing music whether we like it or not. At least Spotify is trying to make sure listeners aren’t completely in the dark about who, or what, they’re listening to.
