Drake Backs DJ Akademiks Following Rob Markman Rant

Hip-Hop media is becoming the Wild Wild West.

Drake appears to have made his position clear following DJ Akademiks’ lengthy rant about Rob Markman and the current state of hip-hop media.

Akademiks spent much of Monday evening criticizing Markman and several members of the broader hip-hop media community, including Loren Lorosa and Marc Lamont Hill. His comments came after Markman accused Akademiks of using an army of clippers to push specific narratives. Akademiks pushed back on that criticism, questioning the credibility of media figures who, in his opinion, primarily write about stories rather than actually break them.

During his rant, Akademiks praised “What’s The Dirt” and “Trap Lore Ross,” pointing to them as examples of what he considers real journalism. He also gave a shoutout to Rolling Stone’s Nancy Dillon for her reporting on major court cases.

While streaming, Akademiks revealed that Drake had sent him a text message reacting to the rant. According to Akademiks, Drake enjoyed what he had to say and particularly appreciated the humor behind his fiery commentary.

It’s already tough enough for hip-hop journalists, so I hate seeing this kind of beef develop within the media community. However, I also understand where Akademiks and Drake are coming from. They clearly feel there is a hate campaign against them and believe they are calling out people they feel have been inconsistent or unfair in their coverage. There are a lot of rabbit holes being explored right now, and Ak and Drake seem very aware of them.
