Emp Tafari’s father named him ’emperor,’ and listening to his music, I can see why. Whenever the Harlem rapper enters the booth, what you get is nothing but bossed-up bars, which typically leads to tracks that g’s all over can learn a thing or two from. In “Pops Named Me Emperor,” his latest project, Emp shines by gifting us with a body-of-work that is passionate, emotional, authentically hood, refreshingly hip-hop, and most importantly, unapologetically NY. Soso is one of those rappers that is trill, but also braggadocios. In “Hers,” his latest EP, the Los Angeles native blends both worlds together to create this three-track body-of-work that features a soulful banger (“Can’t Stand Me”), a club-ready banger (“Tell Me”), and a sly banger (“Fasho”).
