DJ Premier & Samara Cyn Reimagine “Can I Kick It” for MLS Campaign

Rating: 4 out of 5.

DJ Premier and Samara Cyn blend nostalgia with modern energy on an unforgettable reinterpretation.

The World Cup has brought soccer back to the forefront of American sports conversations, and MLS isn’t wasting any time riding that wave. To launch its “Thanks World, We’ll Take It From Here” campaign, the league partnered with Amazon Music, DJ Premier, and rising artist Samara Cyn for a fresh take on A Tribe Called Quest’s iconic “Can I Kick It?”

Reimagining such a legendary hip-hop record is always risky, but this version finds a nice balance between honoring the original and introducing a modern twist. Samara Cyn approaches the verses with confidence, swagger, and an easygoing charisma that feels inspired by Q-Tip without sounding like a direct imitation. At the same time, DJ Premier works his magic behind the boards, adding crisp scratches, booming drums, and cinematic production elements that make the track feel alive.

Rather than simply recreating a classic, the duo injects enough personality to make the cover feel worthwhile. Now I want to see Samara tackle JAŸ-Z’s “22 Twos.”
