“Is It Cool?” Really embodies not knowing what’s gonna happen, but jumping in anyway.
Steve Lacy and SZA waste absolutely no time on “Is It Cool?” There’s no long intro or dramatic buildup. The song jumps straight into it, and somehow Steve makes that feel completely natural. It’s the kind of opening that immediately grabs your attention and keeps you locked in from the very first second.
Lyrically, the track is about growing up and realizing that nobody really teaches you how to love. You’re trying to figure yourself out while also learning how to show up for someone else. There’s uncertainty in every decision, and you don’t always trust your own judgment, but you know one thing for sure. You don’t want temporary flings or surface level relationships anymore. You’re ready for something genuine, even if you’re still learning what real love actually looks like.
Steve delivers the song with the effortless cool that he’s become known for, while SZA slides in with a verse that feels emotional, honest, and unmistakably her. Their voices complement each other beautifully, giving the track a dreamy, intimate atmosphere that never feels forced. The production is smooth and understated, allowing the emotion in their performances to take center stage.
What I really love about “Is It Cool?” is how relatable it feels. It’s not about having all the answers. It’s about accepting that love is a learning process, embracing the uncertainty, and choosing to be vulnerable anyway. Steve Lacy and SZA have always been a great pairing, and this collaboration is another reminder of just how naturally they bring out the best in each other.
