Dave East – Karma 2 (Album Review)

You know what I love about Dave East? He comes across like a lovable bad guy. Yes, he’s shot his gun plenty of times, talks about moving weight and treating chicks like objects, but he does it in a way that is so authentic, you can’t help but respect it. In “Karma 2,” I expect more of the same from the Harlem rapper, as he continues to balance commercial success with his hard-to-leave-behind street ties. (more…)

Popcaan – Forever (Album Review)

Popcaan’s name hasn’t quite been a household one over here in the states, but it has definitely been bubbling these last couple of years. For starters, he’s emerged as one of the go-to Jamaican artists that our favorite rappers have been calling on when they want a gritty Reggae inspired hit — especially after his contributions on Drake’s “Controlla.” But damn all that, Gina! This weekend, our guy dropped his heavily anticipated “Forever” project, and I anticipate it being a major player in the Modern day Dance-Hall scene. Let’s see if the Mixpak Records’ product can successfully bring out my dusty ass happy feet from the closet it was hiding in these last couple of years with the release. (more…)

What a pleasant surprise Future Hendrix has decided to give us with the release of “BEASTMODE 2!” It’s not like he was away from the music scene for a long time, though, as he just gifted us with a fantastic soundtrack to the “Superfly” movie less than a month ago. But you know what they say, right? Hustler’s never sleep, and since music is Future’s product these days, I expect something addictive from him on this short project that is capable of giving the songs on my summer playlist a run for its money.  (more…)

The hip hop industry has made it mandatory to root for Meek Mill. Why not, right? He’s a young black male from Philadelphia that made it out of his hood by working his ass off, only to be derailed by what seems to be an unfair judicial system. For now, his legal issues have subsided, and that honeymoon period that followed his release has began to diminish. Casanova – Commissary (Album Review)

Casanova is one of the few MC’s in the game that gives me these 90’s vibes when he raps. He isn’t super lyrical, but believes that hip hop music’s main ingredient should be energy — just like the MC’s from back in the day thought. Granted, the energy he gives off isn’t quite family friendly, but nonetheless, it is invigorating enough to hype you up and make you think about doing something that might get you arrested. With his debut album, “Commissary,” I look for the NYC native to kick ass and take names, using a style that is now considered unique in hip hop.  (more…)

Yung Bans – Yung Bans Vol. 5 (Review)

Yung Bans has really made a name for himself these last couple of months. Not only has the Atlanta based artist been endorsed by major players like Future and Andre 3000 these last couple of weeks, but he has also been able to release four previous editions of his self-titled EP series despite being on house arrest for the last two years. In his newest EP release, “Yung Bans Vol. 5,” the mumble king looks to take his popularity to another level, capitalizing on the sudden interest his name has been garnering as of late. (more…)

Teyana Taylor – K.T.S.E. (Album Review)

What a bittersweet ending this album symbolizes. For five straight weeks, Kanye West has provided us with some of the most unique/intriguing hip hop albums this year, showing us his ability to think outside of the box when it comes to making music. Hopefully his style inspires other hip hop artists to do the same (I’m looking directly at you Blocboy JB), and also encourages him to get involved in the making of music with other artists in the game. In the mean time, Teyana Taylor, an artist I believe is truly talented, gets her chance to impress fans with her newest effort, and since Kanye is involved in its making, I’m expecting something great.
