Jorja Smith – Lost & Found (Album Review)

Besides being my baby, Jorja Smith has accomplished quite a bit in a small amount of time. In 2017, she managed to have a breakout performance on Drake’s “More Life” playlist, and in early 2018, had a phenomenal feature on Kendrick Lamar’s “Black Panther” soundtrack. Today, she tries to prove to the world that she is more than capable of flying solo, dropping this twelve track EP called “Lost & Found.”

Kids See Ghost – Kids See Ghost (Album Review)

Kids_See_Ghost_Cover.jpg

Another week, another major Kanye West produced project. The latest episode features two of my favorite artists in Kid Cudi and West, so trust that I’m excited about it. Interestingly enough, this collaboration was very close to not happening… Just a few years ago, the two midwest legends had a bit of a falling out while they were both going through a few things in their personal lives. Since then, they’ve reunited, and promised to have as good a music relationship as they ever had. With all that being said, I guess the major question to ask is what do I think this album is going to sound like? I say a smidge of cockiness, a good amount of infectious melodies, and lots of craziness! (more…)

Black Thought – Streams of Thoughts Vol. 1 (Review)

Black Thought and The Roots are that legendary group that everyone tries to reference when a conversation about ‘real rappers’ comes about. One of the main reasons they get this title is because of Black Thought. The one and only rapper in the group has always been looked at as ‘real,’ bringing the gritty nature of Philadelphia to whatever song he’s featured on. Today, he looks to shed his Roots buddies for this five track solo project that is solely produced by 9th Wonder.  (more…)

Dizzy Wright – Don’t Tell Me It Can’t Be Done (Review)

Two things are practically suicidal decisions for your music career: signing to cash money, and releasing an album the same day Kanye releases one. Unfortunately, Dizzy Wright did one of the two here, which tells me he either didn’t read the hip hop rule book, or he is that confident that people will feel his work regardless of who he was competing with. I’m going to go out on a limb and say he was thinking the latter, which means I am expecting something explosive from him on this project. (more…)

Kanye West – Ye (Album Review)

I feel like having something bad to say about Kanye West is the new black, and rightfully so, because he does and says a lot of questionable s**t whenever he’s around either a keyboard or microphone. But one thing I refuse to do is ignore the fact that he belongs in the conversation when it comes to being one of the greatest hip hop musicians of all time. In my opinion, Kanye’s ears for music is astonishing! When he’s wearing his producer hat, he is able to piece together sounds from different eras, genres and wavelengths so masterfully that you’re often reminded that music is a form of art whenever you hear a song he produced. When he’s wearing his rapper hat, he is able to generate so much interest in every word that he spews, taking full advantage of the term ‘free speech’ whenever he hops on the mic. With all the s**t going on in his personal life — the beefs, the inevitable f**kery that comes with being involved with a Kardashian, the erratic tweets, etc., we tend to forget that Kanye has a winning record when it comes to this music s**t, and with this brand new album called “Ye,” he looks to continue his dominance in the genre despite what we all think of him.
